The 10:00 Mass this week will include very special choral music! The Heartland Youth Choir will sing for the Psalm, Offertory Anthem, and a benediction. The Cathedral Choir along with violinist Nathan Thiessen will sing Rivers of Living Water.
The Heartland Youth Choir, founded by Artistic Director, Barbara Sletto in 2003, is a civic organization providing a performance-based program for youth, emphasizing musical literacy and character development. The Heartland Youth Choir is comprised of 190 singers from all over central Iowa from public, private, and home-school settings. In addition to producing four major concerts each year, HYC performs for events in Greater Des Moines, surrounding communities and throughout the state of Iowa. HYC has performed with the Des Moines Symphony, the Des Moines Choral Society, Drake University Choirs and Orchestra, and numerous times with Des Moines Metro Opera. The Chamber Choir is conducted by Jim Cacciatore and Barbara Sletto. They have been invited to sing for state, regional, national and international music conferences with the American Choral Directors Association and Organization of Kodaly Educators Association. The choir tours each year and has performed in Ireland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Canada, the Caribbean, Central America and much of the United States including Hawaii. The Chamber Choir competed in the 2012 World Choir Games along with 364 choirs from 64 countries and returned to Iowa with a gold rating!
